Local Society: Macclesfield

'Founded in 1969 to advance the study of family history and genealogy ... All our officers and officials are unpaid volunteers, helping in their spare time.'

'Macclesfield Astronomical Society is social group of men, women, juniors and guests, newcomers and veterans, novices and experts, in a sociable spectrum of involvement in astronomy. We have at least three regular events to participate in every month throughout the whole year, including an expert lecture every month, and other varied and informal talks, presentations, demonstrations and displays on a range of astronomical topics ... Our long-term aims are to provide a focal point for contact between local astronomers and to make astronomy accessible to the general public.'

'The Macclesfield Canal Society, formed in 1984, has currently about 130 members, who mostly (but not exclusively) reside in the Macclesfield area. Its aim is to promote the canal by means of liaison with local authorities, the Canal & River Trust and the Inland Waterways Association (IWA) ... The Society holds monthly Meetings now on the third Friday of the month, September to May, when a speaker, usually from outside the Society, gives a presentation, often illustrated, on a subject related to canals, or of interest to canal enthusiasts.'

'Formed in May 2006 with the aim of providing a forum where people can discuss contemporary ideas in a wide range of topics from literature, philosophy, science, and the arts. We meet in Macclesfield Library eight times a year spread over the Autumn, Winter, and Spring months.'
