Local Society: Coventry

Category Arts and Crafts

'Founded in 1955 with the aim of helping bring together the community of craft Weavers, Spinners and Dyers. Rather than set up another organisation for individual craft people we chose the path of becoming an Association of Guilds - an umbrella body to which regional or local Guilds are affiliated. The aim is to support those regional Guilds by operating at a larger scale with National Conferences, National Exhibitions, Competitions, publications and recognised qualifications certifying individuals' high level of achievement and competence in their chosen craft. We now have over 100 member Guilds representing over 5000 crafts-people.'

'If you're at all interested in astronomy we are the society is for you! Our members range from people with a casual interest in astronomy to serious amateurs and even professionals. You don't need any specialist knowledge to join, nor do you need to own a telescope etc. You can also be sure of a friendly welcome. We normally meet on the second Friday of the month but tend to avoid bank holidays etc.'

'Formed in 1994, the aim was to fulfill a growing need and to promote and encourage the study of family history, genealogy and local history in relation to the City of Coventry and its people. This has changed somewhat with the increasing amount of information available on the internet. ‘CFHS’ is still a great source of information, providing research and assistance for people with Coventry roots, to fill in the missing details of their ancestors ... Meetings are held on the second Monday of every month ... Coupled with our bookshop and library available at these meetings, we have excellent guest speakers ... The talks are varied and informative.'

It exists to promote and develop all aspects of materials science and engineering, geology, mining and associated technologies, mineral and petroleum engineering and extraction metallurgy, as a leading authority in the worldwide materials and mining community ... IOM3 organises a range of events that are ideal opportunities for networking as well as finding out the latest state of the art, updating your technical knowledge, or broadening your materials interests.  Most of our events offer discounts for IOM3 members ... Programmes of events and evening lectures are also organised by our Affiliated Local Societies.'

'We are the IET and we inspire, inform and influence the global engineering community to engineer a better world. As a diverse home across engineering and technology, we share knowledge that helps make better sense of the world in order to solve the challenges that matter. It’s why we are uniquely placed to champion engineering ... Local Networks are groups of members that come together to deliver a series of activities designed to promote the importance of science, engineering and technology to the general public, encourage young people to enter the profession and provide opportunities for engineers to share and develop knowledge and network with each other.''

'Warwickshire has eight Branch Associations, each with a programme of activities throughout the year. Honey bees are only active during the spring and summer, so the summer programme focuses on the apiary and the practical aspects of managing honey bees through the season. During the winter months each Branch arranges a programme of talks and demonstrations.'
