A-Z LECTURES and CATEGORIES

Local Society: Chichester

Founded 1991: Its aims are to increase public awareness of and support for archaeology and to encourage volunteers’ assistance with local activities ... New members are very welcome and experience is not necessary. There is no requirement to become actively involved and many of our members focus on the talks and study days ... From September to May we offer a programme of talks ... given by leading archaeologists, authors and academics. Local courses and events are publicised and magazines are available for members to borrow'.

Founded 1959: 'The Club where you can enjoy collecting stamps. Whether you are a complete novice or an expert collector we cater for everyone. Come and hear interesting talks and displays from visiting speakers or by club members, make new friends and enjoy the wonderful world of Philately and Postcards'.

'You don’t have to be an "Expert Photographer" to be welcomed as a member of Chichester Camera Club. All you need is an interest in photography.'

'Chichester Humanists run a wide range of events and activities for non-religious people.'

'Chichester Literary Society, despite its name, is not elitist. If you love books – and learning about writers and their lives – then this Society is for you. With our programme of talks and social events, we aim to promote love of the written word in whatever form it takes, be it prose or verse, the classics or more modern writers. In addition to talks by writers and literary experts, there are two annual social events – a summer party with readings and a Christmas social.'

'A friendly group of local people with a shared interest in all aspects of wildlife, who have been studying and recording all branches of natural history for over 50 years. We do this in an entertaining manner and, in cooperation with other like-minded groups, help conserve the flora and fauna of Sussex. Members of the Society share a common interest in natural history and while some are experts in particular wildlife fields, others are newcomers to the subject. New members are always welcome ... Lecture evenings are held regularly in Chichester over the winter, while lunchtime sessions in a local pub allow a small group to focus on a particular aspect of nature.'

Monthly Winter and Spring indoor speaker meetings, usually on the first Thursday of the month.

'Our charity brings together thousands of people who share a common belief - that organic growing is essential for a healthy and sustainable world. Through campaigning, advice, community work and research, our aim is to get everyone growing ‘"the organic way" ... Across the UK, there are a large number of fantastic organic gardening groups, clubs, organisations and gardens supporting local residents with their organic growing.'

'We inspire, enable and encourage people to get involved with history, whether in the classroom, at college, in the library or at home. We passionately believe the study of history should be accessible to all people at all levels of study ... The Historical Association is an active organisation with events happening up and down the UK. The local branches all have a lively lecture programme open to both members of the association and any general member of the public wishing to come along.'

'The Society was founded in Cheltenham in 1928 at a time when there was little official information published about locomotive stock, their allocations or regular duties. The Society set about rectifying this by members writing to each other, the publishing of a magazine and some meetings organised around the country ... Move on to the present day and the Society is still going strong with 3000 members ... Our branches hold meetings at least monthly in the season at over thirty centres and in the course of a year host over 200 presentations on a vast range of railway subjects covering the modern scene as well as history and nostalgia subjects.'

'Groups which meet and converse in the UK and beyond, usually gathering once every month. The event was founded in London, UK by Dr Scott Campbell in 1999, for all those interested in science, history, psychology, philosophy, investigative journalism and how to examine extraordinary claims of all types. A speaker (or number of speakers) is invited each month to present a topic of interest, which is followed by a discussion in a relaxed and friendly pub atmosphere.'

'The Sussex Family History Group was founded in 1972. It has about 3500 members in Sussex, the rest of the UK, and around the world. There are five meeting centres in the County ... If you live in Sussex you are likely to find one fairly near to you.'
