Occasional talks.
'Meetings are held on the third Friday of each month ... The December meeting is the Society's Christmas Dinner and there is no meeting in August ... The monthly meetings start at 7 o'clock for 7.30 pm and finish at 9.30 pm, followed by refreshments and observations if feasible.'
'Each autumn and winter we have a series of lectures on archaeological, historical or architectural subjects, including the spring Invitation Lecture given by a prestigious speaker to which other local history societies are invited.'
‘Houses the borough’s permanent collection of fine art, which has grown through gifts, bequests and purchases since its beginnings in 1947, reflecting the vibrant mix of the community and its cultural heritage ... The Friends hold monthly meetings which include lectures from experts, on a variety of topics. They offer an opportunity to talk to the speaker and socialise with members.’
'Meetings are free and are held in the Lounge Bar. Come along and enjoy a drink, a chat, and a bird related talk.'
Usually held mid-April.
'We hold regular indoor meetings ... They start at 7.30 pm with any news and reports from members about anything interesting they've seen or heard about since the last meeting. Next, there's a 'half-time' interval for a look at any exhibits brought in by members and a bit of general chit-chat amongst friends. Finally, the guest speaker will deliver their talk (usually with a slide-show) and answer a few questions afterwards. It's usually all over by 9.30 pm.'
'Lectures commence at 11.00 am and are normally held on the third Wednesday of each month (excluding July, August and December) ... Bring a friend to our lively meetings or make new friends when you arrive. There is only one thing more stimulating than enjoyment of the Arts: enjoying the Arts with like-minded people. Our dynamic programme of lectures, tours and visits is made even more interesting by the presence of others who share the same interests as you.' Note that you will need to apply by e-mail to join the Branch and attend meetings (and there is mention of a waiting list on the Website).
'The society has a monthly talk on Whitby's history and Whitby life. They are usually held ... on the third Monday of each month and cost £2.00 but members pay £1.00. They are open to all and everyone is welcome. Tea or coffee and a biscuit is sold during the interval. This year we are introducing selling something to eat as an extra ...'
'Talks take place at 2.15 pm on the fourth Wednesday in every month, except for August and December, in the Normanby Room. Whilst originally intended for members of the Lit. and Phil., non-members are now most welcome on payment of £1.00. Talks usually last just over 1 hour and are often accompanied by slides or other illustrative matter ...Whitby Museum is owned and operated by Whitby Literary and Philosophical Society, a charitable body established in January 1823, a period when such societies operated in many British towns ... The chief object of the Society was to setup and maintain a museum, specialising in fossils, since “Whitby is a chief town of a district abounding with petrifications and containing not a few Antiquities".'
'Between October and late February with a break in December, there is a programme of illustrated lectures held every Saturday afternoon in the Normanby Room at the museum in Pannett Park: the meeting starts at 2.00 pm and normally finishes about 3.30. Each of the Interest Groups is covered and the lectures are given both by our members and external specialists.'
