‘On April 19th 1880 at 17 Bloomsbury Square a group of five men met to discuss the establishment of a new student organisation for the serious discussion of philosophy. Far from a gathering of professional academic philosophers, the group included a British Socialist activist, a Shakespeare scholar and importantly a young chemist – Dr. Alfred Senier – whose original idea it had been, along with some of his students, to set up a philosophical society ... Since its foundation, The Society has provided, and continues to provide, a welcoming forum for philosophers and non-philosophers alike to listen to high quality talks and to engage in philosophical discussion.'

'World-leading staff, an active and international student community, and an exceptionally diverse range of modules makes Sheffield one of the world’s most exciting places to study philosophy ... Our departmentally organised events and activities range from conferences to community outreach, whilst our staff and students also put on a range of social and research-based activities.'
'Our outreach projects aim to inspire the next generation of philosophers and to bring philosophy into the wider community. Doing philosophy doesn’t require any special knowledge, tools or techniques – just reason, an open mind, and a willingness to challenge assumptions. Our outreach activities are focused on facilitating and guiding philosophical debate and reflection for those who may have had no prior exposure to the subject.'

'Philosophy has been studied at Oxford for over 800 years. Some of the world’s most famous philosophers have taught at Oxford ... Today the Faculty of Philosophy at Oxford is widely acknowledged to be one of the world’s great centres for research and teaching in philosophy ... The Faculty’s high standing, together with internationally renowned lecture series such as the annual John Locke lectures, attract many distinguished academic visitors, with a very large number of philosophers both from around the UK and from the rest of the world giving lectures or seminars in Oxford each year. Almost every major philosopher speaks in Oxford at some time in their career.'
'The Institute's aim is to promote and facilitate high quality research in philosophy, making it available to the widest possible audience both inside and outside the UK's academic community ... The Institute's events are open to everyone. You do not have to be a member of the Institute, or a member of any university, to attend Institute events.'
