Ideas and The Future

‘The Academy was founded in 2000 to provide a forum committed to open and robust public debate in which ideas can be interrogated, argued for and fought over. We organise intelligent public debates, on controversial topics, and most importantly challenge contemporary knee-jerk orthodoxies. One focus of our work is to ensure that new generations look behind the headlines and avoid over simplistic conclusions on difficult topics. We are especially concerned about the “dumbing down” of debate, and to this end we organise a range of high-profile public events.’ Events have included an annual Battle of Ideas Conference held in London in the Autumn.'

'Agile Rabbit puts on events about issues that matter: ideas, culture, global affairs, and the natural and scientific world. They are an opportunity to be in the room with some of the greatest minds in the world—and have a conversation. Agile Rabbit’s key theme is that cutting edge thinking can be at the centre of everyday life. There is an informal atmosphere at events, with discussion between the audience and the people who speak. Whether you agree with them or not, your opinion is heard ... We are pleased to be in partnership with the University of Exeter.

‘Our Also Festival serves up brilliant speakers and their ideas to you in a stylish, relaxed and natural setting.’ Held Early July.

'We aim to offer a much-needed space to exchange ideas and opinions and to debate a whole range of subjects. Salon meetings are not a series of pre-programmed lectures in which people sit passively and listen. The idea is for the audience to challenge speakers and be challenged themselves by different ideas. If you feel that there is a debate-shaped hole in your life, and you live in or around Birmingham, then come along.'

'A partnership organisation that explores the key issues of our time through the arts and sciences. At the heart of our work are ideas ... Our year-round events programme is a mixture of online and "in real life" and continues to feature writers and thinkers from all over the world.'

'Café Culture welcomes you to café-style discussions on culture, politics, philosophy and science. Open to all, no prior knowledge needed, just a like-minded desire for convivial and lively banter. Events are free ... Donations welcome ...'

Demos is a champion of people, ideas, and democracy. We bring people together. We bridge divides. We listen and we understand. We are practical about the problems we face, but endlessly optimistic and ambitious about our capacity, together, to overcome them.‘

Founded in 2010: 'Since then dozens of distinguished speakers have come to Salons in Derby to engage in debates and talk about their work and often to put forward some very controversial ideas. Like other Salons in the UK and internationally, we defend the freedom to think, to act, to say what needs saying – even if it offends others ... The East Midlands Salon, like those that currently exist in Brighton, Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Sheffield, Scotland, Dublin and Zurich, is inspired by the Academy of Ideas (AoI) and its flagship event the Battle of Ideas Festival.'

'Groups which meet and converse in the UK and beyond, usually gathering once every month. The event was founded in London, UK by Dr Scott Campbell in 1999, for all those interested in science, history, psychology, philosophy, investigative journalism and how to examine extraordinary claims of all types. A speaker (or number of speakers) is invited each month to present a topic of interest, which is followed by a discussion in a relaxed and friendly pub atmosphere.'
